Low-Scale Pyro Explosion - focused on timing, scale, and motion behavior in small-scale explosions. — the initial impact, expansion, and final dissipation.Unlike large cinematic blasts, this project explores a more controlled explosion with faster upward motion, thinner smoke structures, sharper details, and rapidly dissipating fire.
Comparing two most important factors of a pyro blastwith my earlier project, “Big Blast” — time and scale — this project focuses on how mass, energy, and motion change the overall feel of an explosion. Unlikethe previous large-scale blast, this project explores a smaller human-scale explosion.
In Houdini, scale is not just about physical size. Small explosions move faster, shoot upward quickly, contain thinner smoke, sharperdetails, and the fire dissipates rapidly.
Larger explosions, on the other hand,feel heavier, with slower movement, thick rolling smoke, stronger pressureexpansion, and smoke that rises with visible weight and momentum.
This project studies how timing and scale work togetherthrough the three main phases of a pyro blast: the initial impact phase, the expansion phase, and the final dissipation phase.
The setup for this project is intentionally simple, focusing mainly on timing, scale, and motion behavior rather than a complex node network.
To reduce the scale of the explosion expansion, the most important step was controlling the source size in the Pyro Burst Source.Lowering the Initial Size values such as Uniform Radius or Blast Radius creates a much smaller explosion volume.
The particle scale in the Pyro Source SOP was also reduced since a smaller source naturally produces a smaller blast.
For sharper details and cleaner smoke shapes, a smallervoxel size was used. Small voxels allow the solver to capture finer detailslike thin wisps and tighter fire structures.
To transform the earlier “Big Blast” setup into a smaller-scale explosion, several simulation parameters were carefully reduced and controlled.
- Lowered the Expansion Rate to reduce the overall spread of the blast
- Reduced the Time Scale for slower and more controlled motion
- Increased Dissipation so density disappears faster
- Decreased Flame Lifespan for quicker fire decay
- Kept Wind at 0 for a grounded explosion feel
- Increased Drag in the Shape tab to make the smaller-scale explosion feel heavier and more controlled
